Desmond's Timeline

Okay, I'm almost positive now that Desmond is recording over this own timeline. Before he goes back in time, Des doesn't remember meeting Faraday, and he wouldn't because in the timeline he'd lived up until the helicopter ride, he had never met Faraday. When he jumped back to his military days he actually erased everything that had happened afterwards, so that the military became his present. He then jumped ahead to the new timeline created by jumping back. Every time he jumped back (and when he did, it was closer and closer to present day), he created a new timeline and erased the old one. So by the end of his jumping, he and Faraday remembered meeting each other in the past.

I think of it as a video tape (for obvious reasons) with regenerating timecode. Let's say that when Desmond meets Mrs. Hawking, that was 01:01:00 in the time code. Present day on the island would be something like 01:59:24. While on the helicopter, Desmond's tape was rewound to 01:04:00 and he made a whole new recording up to 01:59:24, recording over all the old footage. Then he jumped back to 01:05:00 and yet again recorded over all of the footage for the rest of the tape. And on and on.

I don't think Desmond can jump back to before he was born or forward to after he's dead, though. I think he can only move within his own lifespan.

On an unrelated note, I really hope Charles Widmore finds Richard Alpert's name in the Black Rock ledger.

Richard Alpert IS the first mate who wrote that journal and left the island at some point with the journal and delivered it to the Hanso Family, the only known owners of the journal.

Dunno, Faraday says you can't change the future.

Also, keep in mind that by episode's end, it is still 1996 Desmond on the boat in 2004.

Either way, I definitely think he came to the island on that ship.

It's not 1996 Desmond in 2004. It's always present time wherever Desmond is, or rather, whenever Desmond is.

Yes, I completely agree.

However as soon as they passed through the event horizon of the island, the consciouness in Desmond's body was that of the 1996 Desmond. The whole episode was from the perspective of 1996 Desmond. He didn't know who Sayid was or anything that had happened to him after 1996.

That never changes throughout the episode. Everything he experiences in 1996 happens over the course of his 2 day leave. The Desmond that talks to Penny and hangs up the phone and thanks Sayid in 2004 is still 1996 Desmond.
