Okay, I'm almost positive now that Desmond is recording over this own timeline. Before he goes back in time, Des doesn't remember meeting Faraday, and he wouldn't because in the timeline he'd lived up until the helicopter ride, he had never met Faraday. When he jumped back to his military days he actually erased everything that had happened afterwards, so that the military became his present. He then jumped ahead to the new timeline created by jumping back. Every time he jumped back (and when he did, it was closer and closer to present day), he created a new timeline and erased the old one. So by the end of his jumping, he and Faraday remembered meeting each other in the past.
I think of it as a video tape (for obvious reasons) with regenerating timecode. Let's say that when Desmond meets Mrs. Hawking, that was 01:01:00 in the time code. Present day on the island would be something like 01:59:24. While on the helicopter, Desmond's tape was rewound to 01:04:00 and he made a whole new recording up to 01:59:24, recording over all the old footage. Then he jumped back to 01:05:00 and yet again recorded over all of the footage for the rest of the tape. And on and on.
I don't think Desmond can jump back to before he was born or forward to after he's dead, though. I think he can only move within his own lifespan.
On an unrelated note, I really hope Charles Widmore finds Richard Alpert's name in the Black Rock ledger.

Time Dilation
My new theory is that the island is moving at such a high rate that time on the island is perceived as slower than the rest of the world, which would explain the time difference between the island and the freighter (which we now know is called the Kahana). Here's a short explanation:
Time dilation would make it possible for passengers in a fast-moving vehicle to travel further into the future while aging very little, in that their great speed retards the rate of passage of on-board time. That is, the ship's clock (and according to relativity, any human traveling with it) shows less elapsed time than the clocks of observers on Earth. This is why a highly precise atomic clock flying in an experiment called NAVEX on STS-61A/Challenger in 1985 measured a slowdown of 0.000,000,000,295 seconds for each second of flight. The closer you reach light speed, the greater the time difference.
Desmond has already experienced this time dilation when he left the island in his sailboat on November 5th, sailed for 2 and a half weeks (according to him), and landed back on the island on November 25th, only two weeks later in island time.

9 to 5
Penny lives at 423 Cheyne Walk. 4+2+3=9! Maybe there is something to this 5 and 9 thing.*

VALENZETTI EQUATION
The Valenzetti equation is a mathematical representation of core environmental and human factors that will cause the world to end (in 2015 FYI). Which is exactly what the Island and the Oceanic 6 are.
The entire point of the D.H.A.R.M.A Initiative is to change these numeric variables (4 8 15 16 23 42) and forstall the end of the human race and save the world. D.H.A.R.M.A. does it the way Juliet, as a Man of Science, would, by essentially stripmining the Island and focusing on the hard sciences when the reverse is called for. As you touch the world, so the world touches you. It's not about man changing the island, it's about the Island changing man. This is me making the Man of Faith arguement and "it's never BEEN easy!"
The Others are the "good guys" because they exist to preserve the control environment (island) and the passangers of Flight 815 are the "bad people" who cause the end of man. The island serves as a purgatory to the human factors (healing them, prolonging life, giving them a second chance to be whoever they want to be on the island, preventing new births, using the monster to eliminate those who do not change) until they learn or change in their core, thus changing the numeric variables and saving the world. It is worth noteing that Boone died at the exact moment Aaron was born (a sacrifice the island demanded)
The flashbacks showed us how the passengers were led to Flight 815. The island's / fate influence is evident in the six degrees of seperation between all the passengers. For example, Christian Shepard led the leader of each group to the flight, Jack Shepard (duly elected) and Ana Lucia Cortez (Dictator). The plane itself is broken into two groups landing on seperate sides of the island having almost the exact opposite experience from each other. Middle Section had 43 survivors, Tail section had 22.
The flashforwards so far have shown the Oceanic 6 to be the exact opposite of the way they were when they boarded the plane. They are changed variables from their time on the island. Dead Charlie tells them they are needed to return, not to save the other plane crash survivors, but to complete the equation and save the world.
Middle Section / Oceanic 6:
4 = (Adam) Jack, the good Shepard that heals his flock is now a disconnected junkie that wants to die.
8 = (Eve + Child = Infinity) Kate, the fugitive woman guilty of patricide whose own selfishness has destroyed all those who loved her is now a dedicated mother happily confined to one state for 10 yrs and the custodian of the best hope for the future...the next Shepard...Aaron, born from the island.
15 16 = (Only consecutive numbers indicating a union) Sun & Jin, a married man and woman on the verge of ruin represented by their lack of power to conceive, have now truly fallen in love & trust and become one, which the island rewarded with another child of great possibility.
23 = (evil) Sayid, a good man looking for love forced into destructive actions by the situations he is placed in, never allowed to truly be happy as his lovers have ALL been murdered or released from him / by him, is now allowing himself to spirial further into the darkness to protect the island. He is the necessary evil that is required to do the dirty work.
42 = (answer to life, the univers, and everything) Hurley, the only sane man living in the mental hospital. He is the salt of the earth, the meek who shall inherit it, and so he hasn't changed at all. He is good. He is the constant the other variables are affecting. He is however, cursed by these numbers to be part of the equation.
Tail Section (last 6 survivors to make it across the island to Jack's camp)
4 = Mr. Eko (Adam) Drug lord turned priest. Killed by the monster after confessing he did not repent his sins and so had not truly changed.
8 = Ana-Lucia (Eve + child = Infinity) - remember she lost her baby before the island and remained a miserable bitch the whole time until Michael killed her.
15 16 = Bernard & Rose (only consecutive numbers indicating a union) - This couple seperated to allow for a different variable to play out. Rose will never leave the island because of her cancer, thus eliminating them from the equation.
23 = Libby (evil) - I know it's a reach but we know the least about her (never had her own flashback, only appeared in Desmond's & Hurley's). Chick could be evil. Also killed by Michael.
42 = Cindy (answer to life, universe, and everything) - Stewardess taken by the Others which means she is a good person and has the most answers about the Others after living among them. Eliminated because she is simply a good person who has no curse and so no role in the equation.
And there is my bet, open to anyone who wants a piece of this action, that the Oceanic 6 leave the island 108 days after the crash.

This is about as neat and succinct as a physics lesson can get.

Predictions for "The Constant"
As far as I can tell this is gonna be a Desmond-centric episode. My guess is that he goes back in time again and I say this because there was a clip in one of the previews of Desmond with short hair and all cleaned up. There might not even be a flash-forward. The producers have said that by episode 7 of this season we'll know all of the Oceanic 6, so that means we either won't discover one this time or we won't discover one next week.
I also predict that Fisher Stevens will not have a horribly fake Middle Eastern accent.
"With excitement like this, who is needing enemas?"
