In this last episode, The Substitute, Smokey reveals to Sawyer that Jacob had been looking for a replacement to take over duties of protecting the island. The remaining candidates are Jack, Hurley, Sayid (most likely not, since he's dead) and either Sun or Jin. Sawyer's up there on the list, but clearly he wants off the island.
Of the people left, Hurley is the most qualified. He's the only one on the list who's actually seen and spoken to Jacob, he's the one the cabin appeared to out of nowhere, a god damn BIRD screamed his name, and his whole life has revolved around the numbers, which were being transmitted from the island until Rousseau swapped out the transmission for her own.
He's a good person. He's never killed anyone. And it's been alluded to a number of times in the past few episodes that he's the new leader of the pack.
As for how Ben got off the island to become a European History teacher, well, we're all assuming that jughead is what sank the island. What if that wasn't the case? What if jughead made the island barely habitable, so everyone left. Then the island changed it's location to some spot under the ocean? That would certainly explain Ben and Ethan's appearances off island.

Are we sure that Jacob was looking for a replacement...or was he just looking for someone to protect the island? I don't think it was explicit.
My main question is... what is up with the kid? Why could Sawyer see him but Richard couldn't. Was the kid telling Smokey that he couldn't kill Jacob or that he couldn't kill Sawyer?
And according to Damon and Carlton in an Entertainment Weekly interview, they implied that something besides the bomb split time and sunk the island.
Oh and Hurley killed a couple people by accident when he stepped on that balcony...that made him go nuts the first time.
I still think Jughead was the incident and what we're seeing is actually the reality that might have happened if Jacob hadn't of touched all those people. Not a reality that the Jughead explosion created.
Just a quick thought to throw everyone's way: Sawyer is the only one of this group currently left who has been unable to leave the island. Each time he's tried to leave, he gets just off shore and has been forced to return for different reasons. Sure, but what about Jin, you might say. But Jin made it further than Sawyer when he got to the freighter and managed to wash ashore after that. Sawyers case just feel different. There is something about how Sawyer is the only one who hasn't really been able to leave the island's grasp. What does it mean? Probably nothing. But maybe not... Also, totally agree that Hurley is in line to protect the island and I think that Jacob is looking for an heir of sorts. I think the reason Sawyer can see the kid is that he's one of the chosen and I think that Tom made a very good point about the alternate reality, but I think the reason Jacob didn't touch those people is directly related to jughead.
